My Vitiligo Story

Hi! Everybody I am Ryan and I am new to vitiligo. I just wanted to share ideas about vitiligo and its treatments. I got this skin disorder when I was 29 and it was on my chin. What I think is that I developed this disorder because of sunburn but I’m not sure about it. I read several websites about the causes of vitiligo what they say is that vitiligo is caused by inheritance, a single event like sever sunburn or mental trauma, or it is caused by other autoimmune disease such as thyroid disease, diabetes mellitus, and pernicious anemia. The exact cause of this skin disorder has not been discovered yet.

I have also searched a lot about its cure and I would also like to share this information with you people. No cure for vitiligo is available; you can either re-pigment your skin or completely bleach your skin like Michael Jackson. But skin bleaching has several side effects as it sensitizes your skin. Other treatments are topical steroid therapy, psoralen photo-chemotherapy, oral and topical therapies using psoralen, ayurvedic and homeopathic therapies, herbal remedies, surgical therapies and tattooing. As these treatments are quite a lot so I’ll just discuss one in each post.

In this post I’ll just discuss topical steroid therapy for vitiligo. As vitiligo is believed to be an autoimmune disorder so steroids are a good solution for treating vitiligo as it is fairly a potent suppressor of immunity. Skin specialists may prescribe you topical creams and ointments during the early stages of vitiligo. Steroids are usually recommended for a shorter period because they have many side effects.
